We hear that Richmond's got it going on, so we asked Katie Conklin—who works for men's shirtmaker Ledbury—to give us a tour of her town. Along with her company's storefront in a former tobacco warehouse (don't miss the Commonwealth Collection of goods from Virginia makers) here are Conklin's favorite Richmond spots:
WHERE TO EAT
Rappahannock serves homegrown Chesapeake Bay oysters (the owners run an oyster farm) plus other local-flavor dishes from Chef Dylan Fultineer. Don't miss $1 oyster happy hour!
WHERE TO DRINK
As Conklin says, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery offers, "delicious craft beer, a chill atmosphere, and did I mentioned the delicious beer?" Many of the brews include local flavors, like Virginia blackberries and coffee from Richmond's Lamplighter Roasting Company.
WHERE TO SHOP
Husband and wife Andrew Carnwath and Jennifer Garcia—known The Odd Couple—scope out unique furniture, art, and other curiosities for their pop-up shops at Saison Market and Shockoe Denim. Mark your calendar for the open warehouse events they host with Era Vintage, Sharp Man, and Bric-a-Brakman.
WHERE TO EXPLORE
Get your culture fix at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (admission is free!), then stroll down Monument Avenue—"a Civil War history buff's dream come true." The only street listed on the National Register of Historic Places includes incredible architecture as well as statues honoring Robert E. Lee, Arthur Ashe, and others.
